"Your Cousin that eats rugs..."

Recently, while driving, my kids were asking me if I knew anyone that was in jail. I mentioned that I had a cousin who went to jail. Of course they asked why...so I had explained that he had started doing drugs and got caught stealing things in order to buy more drugs. I didn't really think much more about the conversation until just last week when Hannah begun asking me questions.

Hannah: "Mom, do you remember that cousin that likes to eat....um, what do you call it?"
Mom: "I'm not sure, honey. What are you talking about?"
Hannah: "You know. You have a cousin that likes to eat these things....it's kinda like carpet....Grandma has some at her house..."

At this point, I am all kinds of confused and completely lost. So I sat for a minute, shaking my head, trying to make sense of what she's trying to say. Then she blurted out...

Hannah: "RUGS! That's it. Rugs. Do you remember your cousin that eats rugs?"

Right there it all came together and I started laughing so hard I was practically crying.

Mom: "DRUGS, honey. Not rugs. My cousin took drugs."
Hannah: "Ohhhhh. (pause) What are drugs?"

I loved it. This whole time, Hannah thought I had a cousin who went to jail for eating rugs.
