"Rachel, if you don't eat your dinner- you don't get anything else to eat" I said teasingly to my 18 month old, who was pushing her plate away from her with her fork. "That means, No milk, no popcorn..."
"I want popcorn" Hannah proclaimed, her interest in the conversation suddenly peeked.
Whoops...I definitely walked right into this one.
"No, no one is getting popcorn. I was just teasing Rachel." I said, trying to clear up the mishap.
"But we got popcorn last night. Can we do movie night again tonight?" Tyler asked.
"No. That was just a special thing we did for Family Night. We can't do it every night." I said, with a little pang of guilt. I had completely forgotten to prepare a lesson for Family Night- so we had winged it by doing a special Movie Night instead. I figured, the important part was having spent time together...while inhaling popcorn caked in butter and salty goodness (of course).
"Mom, I don't think that we should have done a Movie Night for Family Night." Tyler said.
"Oh yeah," asked Vern, "why is that?"
"We should have been learning about Jesus. I think it makes Jesus sad that we didn't have a lesson." Tyler's comments had me sinking a little in my chair. But, of course, this is Tyler...the best is yet to come. "Everyone raise your hand if you think we should have learned about Jesus for Family Night." BAM!!
One by one, each hand begins to raise. Even little Rachel puts her hand in the air. And, with a smile, and a whole lot of shame, I raise my hand too. One thing I know for sure...there will be no Movie Night next week.
I can't help but laugh as I stand up to clear off the table. I guess this is why we teach our children the gospel, so that when the time comes...they can be there to teach us too.

I laughing so hard that I keep misspelling words and have to go back and retype them... I love that kid! He's just become my hero!
